A child's drawing

This is a drawing by my daughter. Whenever she was given an option to draw what she wanted, it was always a sailboat. The funny part is that we don't have a sailboat and don't even know anyone with a sailboat. Now at 17yrs. old, she says her friends from elementary school still remember her drawing sailboats all the time.

  1. I think tat it is amazing how children can draw something where parents and teachers have no idea whee the idea came from. alos posted a picture of a boat that one of my toddlers drew. Her parentsalso have no idea where the idea or where she may have seen one.

  2. MaryJo,
I am wondering about how old your daughter was when she first started drawing sailboats. I imagine as a preschooler she started eperimenting with basic forms and learned to connect them to create a picture (pictorial stage) because her classmates could easily recognize her sailbhoat drawings as hers, she had created her own personal style (schema). A schema is not only an individual style, it is a mental framework that an individual uses to organize and make sense of their ideas about the world. I would be interested in knowing if at 17 you daughter finds comfort or satisfaction in drawing sailboats today?

  3. Mary Jo,
I think I have the same habit your daughter had. This past year I took "art orders" each day. "Art Orders" were request made by my students of pictures they wanted me to draw but we didn't have time during learning centers to complete. The request were always of people, such as themselves and their family/friends, because that is all I drew, and I'm pretty good if I must say so myself. So at nap time I would sit down with my lunch and a box of crayons and draw pictures of them, and whoever they chose to be in their photo. I enjoyed it because it helped them to reflect on themselves, their families, and the world around them. I would draw them in different locations, like the beach or a big city, and they loved the idea of knowing they could use their imagination to go anywhere, and I enjoyed going for the ride.
